Scoop Tip Line
How to send a story tip by email, what to expect, and honest advice on protecting yourself.
Good stories often start with someone who noticed something. If you have a tip, we would like to hear it. Before you write, though, please read the honest limits of this channel.
How It Works
The tip line is email only: [email protected]. There is no secure drop box, no encrypted upload form and no phone line. Clicking the address opens your own email app. Nothing is sent to us until you send it.
This Is Not Anonymous
Email is not technically anonymous. Your message carries your address, your provider can see it, and records of it may exist outside our control. We will not pretend otherwise. If your safety, job or legal position depends on staying hidden, think carefully before using any email account that can be traced to you.
Protecting Yourself
- Use an email account that is not tied to your name or employer.
- Do not send tips from a work computer or work network.
- Share only what you personally know, and avoid forwarding whole documents that might carry hidden identifying details.
- Consider whether the information could identify you by its very nature.
- Do not include passwords, financial account numbers or government IDs.
What Makes a Good Tip
- What happened, and when.
- How you know, firsthand or secondhand.
- Who else might confirm it.
- Whether there is a deadline, such as an announcement scheduled soon.
- How we may reach you, if at all.
What We Will Do
In this demo edition, tips are best effort. We do not promise a reply, and every story in the launch edition is fictional. In a real newsroom we would check any claim independently, protect sources where the risk is real, and never publish identifying details without agreement.
What We Will Not Do
We do not pay for tips. We do not publish rumor that cannot be supported, and we do not guarantee that a tip becomes a story. Our standards are set out in the Code of Journalistic Ethics.
