Authorities have identified the two alleged gunmen behind the deadly shooting outside San Diego’s largest mosque as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Velasquez. Investigators say the pair, dressed in tactical-style clothing and carrying multiple weapons, allegedly opened fire near the Islamic center, leaving three people dead and several others injured.
According to reports, one suspect’s mother had contacted police earlier that day after noticing firearms missing from her home and becoming concerned about her son’s mental state. Despite the warning, the attack unfolded just hours later while families and children were gathered near the mosque.
Police later discovered the suspects inside a white BMW parked not far from the scene. Both had suffered gunshot wounds believed to have been self-inflicted. Investigators also reportedly found anti-Muslim writings, extremist messages, and hate-related symbols inside the vehicle and on some of the weapons.
Federal authorities and the FBI are now investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime tied to extremist ideology.
