“The Worst Has Happened…”: Entire World Stunned After Final Bodies Found Inside Maldives’ Infamous ‘Shark Cave’
What began as an elite scientific diving expedition in paradise has now turned into one of the darkest maritime tragedies in recent memory.
After four days of desperate searching beneath the crystal-blue waters of the Indian Ocean, authorities in the Maldives confirmed Monday that the remaining bodies of four missing Italian divers had finally been located deep inside the notorious underwater cavern known locally as “Shark Cave.”
The grim discovery officially brings the death toll to six—five tourists and one rescue diver—in what officials are now calling the worst diving disaster in Maldivian history. (New York Post)
A Dive Into Paradise… That Became a Death Sentence
The tragedy began on Thursday morning near Vaavu Atoll, roughly 100 kilometers south of Malé, where a group of experienced Italian divers entered a cave system called Thinwana Kandu, better known among local divers as “Shark Cave.”
The group had arrived aboard the liveaboard yacht Duke of York, accompanied by more than 20 other tourists.
Among the victims were marine ecologist Monica Montefalcone, her 20-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researchers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri, along with dive instructor Gianluca Benedetti.
Initial reports suggest the group descended nearly 60 meters—far beyond the Maldives’ recreational diving limit of roughly 30 meters—and entered a cave system consisting of three interconnected chambers. Authorities later revealed the dive plan submitted for the expedition made no mention of entering the cave. (New York Post)
First Body Found… Then Silence
By Friday, search teams recovered the body of Benedetti near the entrance of the cave.
But the other four had vanished.
What followed was a race against time.
Rough seas battered recovery teams. A yellow marine warning had already been issued for the area when the divers entered the water, raising serious questions about whether the dive should ever have taken place. (New York Post)
Local military divers attempted multiple penetrations into the cave, navigating darkness, narrow tunnels, and depths approaching 200 feet.
Then the tragedy deepened.
Rescue Mission Claims Another Life
On Saturday, Maldivian National Defence Force diver Mohamed Mahudhee failed to resurface after entering the second chamber.
He later died from suspected decompression illness.
Former colleagues later revealed Mahudhee was an experienced diver—but not specifically trained for cave recovery at those depths. Some experts also claimed the team had been using standard compressed air instead of trimix, the specialized gas mixture normally required for dives of that complexity. (New York Post)
His death temporarily halted the mission.
But the families of the missing divers were still waiting.
Elite Divers Flown In From Europe
With local teams unable to safely reach the deepest section, emergency calls were sent across Europe.
Within 48 hours, Divers Alert Network Europe assembled a three-person elite recovery team from Finland—specialists known internationally for extreme cave recoveries and previous deep-water rescue operations.
On Sunday, they arrived in the Maldives.
By Monday morning, they entered Shark Cave.
Three hours later, they emerged with devastating news.
All four remaining bodies had been located in the cave’s third and deepest chamber—the section furthest from daylight. (New York Post)
What They Found Deep Inside Left Even Veterans Shaken
Officials have not publicly disclosed the exact condition of the bodies, nor have they confirmed the precise cause of death.
But members of the recovery community described the operation as “technically brutal” and “emotionally overwhelming.”
One official involved in the mission said the recovery required navigating complete darkness, silt-outs, razor-sharp rock corridors, and zero-visibility conditions.
The bodies remain deep underwater as specialized extraction dives continue.
Authorities say bringing them safely to the surface may take several more days. (Reuters)
Questions No One Can Yet Answer
Why did a group of experienced scientists and divers enter an unauthorized cave at nearly twice the legal recreational depth?
Why did they appear to be using standard recreational equipment rather than technical cave-diving gear?
And why did the dive proceed despite deteriorating weather conditions?
Those questions now form the center of an international investigation involving Maldivian authorities, Italian diplomats, and multiple diving organizations. (New York Post)
For now, one thing is certain:
What was meant to be a scientific expedition in one of the world’s most beautiful oceans has become a nightmare buried in darkness—inside a place local divers have long feared…
The cave they call Shark Cave.
