Actress Sachi Tamashiro: Scenes from Fugitivas were shot on location at an actual prison - PRODU

Sachi Tamashiro, a cast member of Fugitivas, discussed the filming of this series for Las Estrellas and Univisión.

PRODU visited the set of Fugitivas, a telenovela produced by Lucero Suárez for TelevisaUnivision. The series airs Monday through Friday at 8:30PM on Las Estrellas and recently premiered on Univision on Monday, September 23rd. There, members of the cast and the technical crew shared insights into the challenges and complexities of this story, which revolves around sisterhood and takes place primarily within a prison

“Televisa has always been a pioneer in telenovelas, a global leader in the genre. What’s particularly exciting now is the growing focus on more relatable, human themes and stories. In Fugitivas, the characters are incredibly relatable, making it easier for the audience to connect with each of them. It’s an ensemble drama, with multiple storylines intertwined within the main plot,” said Juan Martín Jáuregui, who portrays the prosecutor Ismael Domínguez.

To enhance the authenticity of the plot, the producer decided to film the central characters not only on a prison set but also in a real jail. This experience fostered a sense of empathy in the actresses toward the inmates, as expressed by Sachi Tamashiro, who plays Frida Segovia.

“Filming scenes in a prison is a fascinating experience, and the story of these fugitives escaping and struggling to survive is captivating. As actors, we have the privilege of exploring incredible locations. In this case, we had to film in prisons. This time, I felt a sense of tranquility amidst the anticipation. We didn’t have the opportunity to interact with the inmates, but everything was conducted with utmost respect. Of course, being in such a place always evokes a sense of unease. There are palpable energies, sadness, and pain,” she explained.

Fugitivas features three primary sets: the prosecutor’s office, the jail, and the bar. These sets are located in CDMX, where the technical team skillfully utilizes various tools to create the appropriate atmosphere for each scene. In this regard, Víctor Soto, the director of photography, disclosed the equipment they employ: ‘We work with three Sony F55 cameras and Ultra Prime prime lenses, which we frequently interchange. We use independent machines, switch programs, and have all three cameras recording simultaneously.”

To ensure a cohesive production, he explained that they collaborate closely with the stage director. Together, they rehearse to analyze the movements and determine the optimal camera placements and lenses.

Fugitivas chronicles the story of Frida (Sachi Tamashiro), Lisset (Rocío de Santiago), Lorena (Daniela Álvarez), and Montse (Mariana Kalb), four women imprisoned for their crimes. One of them, however, is wrongfully accused
