The mystery of a South Carolina personal trainer who was found dead after disappearing has deepened after a preliminary autopsy found no conclusive cause of death.
Elena Moore’s autopsy “did not identify an immediate cause of death,” the Lexington County Coroner’s Office announced Monday.
“Examination of the body revealed no evidence of traumatic injury, including no bruising, lacerations, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, blunt force trauma, strangulation, or other external injuries,” the statement read.

The 39-year-old trainer was last seen leaving a Planet Fitness in Lexington — about 14 miles outside Columbia — and heading toward a wooded area behind a nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store at 9:17 p.m. June 11, the Lexington Police Department said.
Her body was found days later on June 17 in a wooded area about two miles from the Planet Fitness – with neighbors reporting that she’d been exhibiting strange behavior in the week leading up to her disappearance.
Moore’s body was positively identified by the coroner’s office, which noted that further examination would be required to fully understand what led to her death.
“The cause of death remains pending at this time,” the office said. “Additional evaluation is required, including histological studies, review of medical records, and toxicology testing.”
“No further information will be released by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office until all pending studies have been completed and the pathologist has determined the cause and manner of death,” it added.
Moore – who worked at Wolf’s Fitness Center — was seen in surveillance footage wearing an olive green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants when she left the Planet Fitness and disappeared.
About a week before Moore disappeared she was seen on a neighbor’s Ring footage picking up their food delivery – then she tried to walk into the neighbor’s apartment when they opened the door.
Neighbor Sarah Burleson told WRDW that an hour later as she was walking her dog she saw Elena lingering outside a neighbor’s apartment inspecting packages. When she asked what the woman was doing, she replied “Honestly? I have no idea.”
“Her confusion worries me, if she was confused exactly a week before she went missing, was she in that same kind of confusion state that night?” Burleson told the outlet. “And if so that could be scary.”
Moore was reported missing by her husband, Brannon Slice, a day after she was last seen.
He described her disappearance as “very out of character.”
