he National Rifle Association (NRA) has slammed a claim made by a federal prosecutor who posted that law enforcement was likely “legally justified” in shooting Alex Pretti because he had been carrying a gun.
Pretti, 37, was identified as the man who was fatally shot by federal officers in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Officials have claimed that Pretti was armed and intended to kill law enforcement officers, but video footage shows that he was holding a phone — not a gun — before he was taken to the ground by several officers at the scene.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alleged that Pretti “approached” officers while armed with a handgun and “violently resisted” them.
In a post on X, Bill Essayli, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, responded to the DHS’ assertion that Pretti had a gun.
“If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you,” Essayli said.
Essayli’s claim was criticized by the NRA, which also responded to the post on X.
“This sentiment from the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California is dangerous and wrong,” the NRA said. “Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalizations and demonizing law-abiding citizens.”
Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital prior to his death.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference that Pretti was a lawful gun owner who had a permit to carry.
Pretti’s family said in a statement reported by CNN that he had been trying to “protect a woman” in his final moments.
“Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends, and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital,” his family said. “Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.”
