THE MAID WAS ACCUSED OF STEALING JEWELS—UNTIL I HEARD WHAT SHE REALLY KNEW
The Maid Was Accused of Stealing Jewels — Until the Mafia Boss Revealed What She Really Heard
Alessandro Vitale came home before sunset with white roses in one hand and a wedding date folded inside his jacket.
He had not told anyone he was returning early.
That was the point.
For once, the most feared man in Palermo wanted to surprise someone gently. No guards announcing him. No staff lined up in the hall. No black cars rolling through the courtyard like a funeral procession.
Just Alessandro, a quiet house, and the beautiful woman he was almost ready to marry.
Then something shattered in the east wing.
A little girl screamed.
She came running down the marble hallway with one ribbon hanging from her dark curls, tears streaking her cheeks, her small shoes slipping as she threw herself against his suit.
“Please,” she sobbed. “Please help my mama. The pretty lady is hurting her.”
Every guard moved at once.
Alessandro lifted one hand.
They froze.
He looked down and recognized the child. Clara Romano. Six years old. Daughter of Elena, one of the maids.
“Where is your mother?” he asked.
Clara pointed toward Bianca’s private suite.
“She said Mama would disappear. She said if Mama told, she would take her away.”
Something inside Alessandro went cold.
He walked toward the east wing without a sound. The door to Bianca’s suite stood half open.
Inside, Elena’s voice shook.
“She is a child. She heard nothing. Please leave her out of this.”
Bianca’s reply came low and sweet.
“That is exactly why you will remember your place.”
Alessandro pushed the door open.
And there was Elena, soaked and kneeling beside broken porcelain, while Bianca stood above her in silk with an empty crystal jug in her hand.
For half a second, Bianca still looked like the woman society adored.
Then Alessandro saw the red mark around Elena’s wrist.
Bianca whispered, “Thank God you’re here. She became hysterical.”
But Alessandro did not look at his bride.
He looked at the maid on the floor.
