My Estranged Sister Interrupted the Board Meeting With a Letter From Our Mother

THE MAN WHO HATED WOMEN
Episode 12

A month passed. The change in Adrian Cole became impossible to ignore.

He was still firm in his decisions and demanded excellence from every department, but the fear that once filled the office had been replaced by respect. Employees no longer panicked when they saw him walking through the corridors. Instead, they greeted him with genuine smiles, and to everyone’s surprise, he always greeted them back.

For Adrian, however, every day was still a battle.

There were moments when his old temper threatened to return. Sometimes a careless mistake or a delayed project stirred the anger he had lived with for years. But whenever he felt himself losing control, he remembered his mother’s words.

“Hatred is a prison that punishes the person living inside it.”

Those words became his anchor.

One Monday morning, Adrian and Bisola were reviewing documents for a multi-billion-naira housing project when a loud argument erupted outside his office.

“You can’t just walk in!” the receptionist protested.

“I don’t care who is inside!”

Before anyone could stop her, the office door flew open.

A glamorous woman in her early thirties strode into the office wearing an expensive red designer dress, dark sunglasses resting on her head, and carrying an air of entitlement.

She ignored Bisola completely.

Her eyes were fixed on Adrian.

“So… this is where you’ve been hiding.”

Adrian’s expression immediately changed.

His jaw tightened.

“Vanessa.”

Bisola looked from Adrian to the woman, sensing years of unresolved history between them.

Vanessa folded her arms and laughed bitterly.

“I’ve been calling you for weeks.”

“I changed my number.”

“I noticed.”

She glanced at Bisola before smirking.

“So you’ve already found another woman.”

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“This is my executive assistant.”

“Oh?”

Vanessa said sarcastically.

“That’s what you’re calling her now?”

Bisola quietly gathered the files on the desk.

“I’ll excuse you both.”

“No,” Adrian said firmly.

“I’d rather you stay.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“So she’s important enough to stay while we talk?”

Adrian looked directly at her.

“I have nothing to hide.”

For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Finally, Vanessa removed a large envelope from her handbag and dropped it on Adrian’s desk.

“I came because my father is selling his shares in your company.”

Adrian looked at the envelope but didn’t touch it.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“He’ll only sell them to one person.”

“And?”

“You.”

Adrian leaned back in his chair.

“I already declined.”

Vanessa frowned.

“You didn’t even listen to the offer.”

“I don’t do business with your family anymore.”

Bisola could see the pain behind his composed face.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You still blame me for what happened?”

Adrian’s eyes met hers.

“No.”

His answer surprised both women.

“I blamed you for years.”

He paused before continuing.

“But I’ve learned that carrying bitterness only destroys the person holding it.”

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

“You’ve… forgiven me?”

“I’ve forgiven myself.”

The words hung in the air.

For the first time since entering the office, Vanessa’s confidence faded.

She realized the angry man she had always known no longer existed.

She quietly picked up the envelope.

“I’m sorry, Adrian.”

He gave a small nod.

“I know.”

Without another word, Vanessa turned and walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, she looked at Bisola.

“I hope you know how rare this man has become.”

Then she left.

The office fell silent.

Bisola slowly looked at Adrian.

“You knew her well.” He sighed deeply.

“She was the first woman I ever loved.” Bisola’s heart skipped.

Adrian walked to the window, staring out over the city.

“I thought she betrayed me.” He smiled sadly.

“Maybe she did… maybe she didn’t.”

“What matters now is that I’ve stopped allowing yesterday to control today.”

Bisola walked over and stood beside him.
“You handled that better than I expected.”

He chuckled softly.

“So did I.” They shared a quiet laugh.

For the first time, the silence between them wasn’t awkward.

It was comfortable. Peaceful.

Neither of them noticed the receptionist watching through the glass office walls with a knowing smile.

For the rest of the afternoon, Adrian couldn’t concentrate.

The contracts remained open on his desk.

The housing project that had demanded his full attention that morning now seemed strangely unimportant.

Not because Vanessa had returned.

But because she had left without taking his peace with her.

Months ago, seeing her would have destroyed his entire week.

Today…

She had simply become another chapter that had finally ended.

Bisola noticed him staring through the office windows.

“You’ve read the same page three times.”

Adrian smiled.

“I know.”

“You don’t have to pretend you’re fine.”

“I’m not pretending.”

He looked at her.

“I actually am.”

She studied him carefully.

For once…

He wasn’t hiding behind work.

At that moment, the receptionist knocked softly.

“Sir?”

“Come in.”

“A woman is here asking for Mrs. Grace Cole.”

Adrian frowned.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She says it’s urgent.”

Adrian and Bisola exchanged a quick glance.

His mother rarely came to the office.

If she needed him, she always called first.

“Show her in.”

A few seconds later…

Grace Cole walked inside.

She looked elegant as always, but Adrian immediately noticed something unusual.

She wasn’t smiling.

She carried a sealed brown envelope tightly against her chest.

“Mom?”

She looked at him.

“We need to talk.”

Adrian stood immediately.

“Is something wrong?”

She nodded once.

“Close the door.”

Bisola quietly started gathering the documents.

“I’ll give you both some privacy.”

Grace stopped her.

“No.”

Her voice was surprisingly firm.

“You should stay.”

Bisola hesitated.

Adrian nodded.

“If my mother wants you here… so do I.”

Grace sat down slowly.

For several seconds, she simply stared at the envelope in her hands.

Finally…

She slid it across the desk.

“I received this yesterday.”

Adrian looked down.

No sender.

No address.

Only one sentence written across the front.

FOR THE WOMAN WHO LIED TO HER SON.

The room fell silent.

Adrian slowly looked up.

“What is this?”

“I don’t know.”

“You opened it?”

Grace nodded.

“I wish I hadn’t.”

She opened the envelope.

Inside…

Old photographs.

A faded newspaper clipping.

Hospital records.

And one cassette tape.

Bisola frowned.

“A cassette?”

Grace’s hands trembled slightly.

“It was recorded thirty-one years ago.”

Adrian’s heartbeat quickened.

“What does it say?”

“I couldn’t play it.”

“Why?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Because the note inside says…”

Her voice almost disappeared.

‘This recording contains the truth about your father’s death.’

Adrian froze.

“My father?”

His father had died when Adrian was only six.

His entire life, he had been told it was a tragic highway accident.

Grace had never spoken much about it.

Only that it happened during a business trip.

Adrian slowly picked up the newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN MIDNIGHT CRASH.

He had seen similar articles before.

Nothing unusual.

Then…

He noticed someone had circled one paragraph with red ink.

Police continue investigating reports that another vehicle was seen leaving the scene moments before emergency responders arrived.

Adrian looked up sharply.

“I’ve never read this part.”

Grace nodded.

“Because every copy I ever showed you had that paragraph removed.”

Bisola’s eyes widened.

“Removed?”

Grace closed her eyes.

“I did it.”

Silence.

Adrian couldn’t believe what he had heard.

“You… hid this from me?”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Grace reached into the envelope again.

This time…

She removed a photograph.

It showed Adrian’s father standing beside another man.

Both smiling.

Both wearing construction helmets.

Grace placed the photograph on the desk.

Adrian stared at it.

“I don’t recognize him.”

“You wouldn’t.”

Grace whispered.

“He disappeared the night your father died.”

Adrian felt something cold settle inside his chest.

“Who is he?”

Grace answered with visible difficulty.

“Your father’s business partner.”

Another pause.

Then she spoke the sentence that shattered everything Adrian thought he knew.

“He wasn’t just his partner…”

“…he was Vanessa’s father.”

The office became completely silent.

Bisola looked from Grace to Adrian in disbelief.

Adrian slowly sat back down.

Every conversation with Vanessa…

Every accusation…

Every year of hatred…

Suddenly looked different.

Grace lowered her head.

“I believed he betrayed your father.”

“So I kept both families apart.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Adrian’s voice was barely audible.

“And now?”

Grace looked at the unopened cassette tape.

“Now…”

“…I’m no longer sure your father died by accident.”

Before anyone could say another word…

Adrian’s office phone rang.

The receptionist’s frightened voice came through the speaker.

“Sir…”

“There are police officers here.”

“They say they’ve reopened your father’s case.”

Adrian looked down at the thirty-one-year-old cassette tape.

For the first time in decades…

The past wasn’t finished with him.

It had just knocked on his office door.

To be continued…
