Nico Antic was one of four separate shark attack victims over the course of 48 hours in Australia this week. The 12-year-old was the most gravely injured of the group, and his friends and family have recently provided updates on his condition.
Antic sustained his injuries on Sunday afternoon. He jumped into the water from a rock ledge at Nielsen Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, then was bitten in the legs by what authorities suspect to have been a bull shark. One of his friends managed to jump in the water and retrieve him, after which New South Wales water police officers applied two tourniquets and administered first aid. He was then transported to Sydney Children’s hospital in Randwick, where he was placed on life support.
In the ensuing days, speculation as to Antic’s condition was fueled by a GoFundMe page created by a family friend, in which organizer Victor Piñeiro wrote that “Despite all efforts, this heartbreaking event has led to the worst possible outcome.”
Since then, a relative who spoke to The Daily Mail clarified to the outlet that, “He is still asleep, but will not be able to make it because his brain is completely unresponsive.” Police confirmed to the outlet that Antic’s condition remains unchanged.
