“You Think I’m the Other Woman?” She Asked After Sending Me a Photo of My Husband — “No. I’m Trying to Help You Find the Woman He’s Been Hiding.”
The Woman in His Phone Wasn’t His Mistress
Emily Carter had been married to Daniel for eight years.
She knew his habits. She knew how he took his coffee, which side of the bed he preferred, and how he always loosened his tie the moment he walked through the front door.
That was why the message frightened her.
It appeared on Daniel’s phone at 11:47 p.m.
“How long are you going to keep lying to her?”
Emily froze.
Daniel was in the shower.
She stared at the screen until another message appeared.
“She deserves to know.”
Emily barely had time to process it before Daniel came out of the bathroom.
He saw the phone in her hand.
For one second, neither of them spoke.
Then Daniel crossed the room and took it from her.
“Who is Samantha?” Emily asked.
His expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
“She’s someone from work.”
“Why is she asking when you’re going to tell me the truth?”
Daniel sighed.
“It’s complicated.”
That answer was worse than an admission.
Over the next few weeks, Emily began noticing things she had once ignored.
Daniel started coming home later.
He began keeping his phone face down.
There were unexplained charges on their joint credit card—$480 at a hotel downtown, $216 at an expensive restaurant, and another $730 payment to a company Emily had never heard of.
When she asked about the hotel, Daniel said it was for work.
When she asked about Samantha, he became irritated.
“You’re imagining things.”
But Emily knew her husband.
And she knew when he was hiding something.
So she started looking.
Samantha Brooks worked in Daniel’s company as a financial analyst. She was thirty-four, married, and had a reputation for being extremely private.
Emily found her social media accounts.
There were pictures of Samantha with her husband, Mark, on vacations in California and Florida.
No pictures of Daniel.
Nothing romantic.
Nothing obvious.
Still, Emily wasn’t convinced.
One Friday afternoon, she followed Daniel.
He drove across town instead of going to his office.
Emily stayed several cars behind him.
Daniel eventually stopped outside a small coffee shop.
Samantha was waiting.
They spoke for nearly twenty minutes.
Then Samantha handed him a thick envelope.
Daniel looked terrified.
Emily’s heart raced.
She was certain.
Her husband was having an affair.
But then something strange happened.
Samantha suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm and said something Emily couldn’t hear.
Daniel pulled away.
He looked angry.
Then Samantha slapped him.
Emily almost stepped out of her car.
Instead, she watched Samantha walk away.
Daniel remained standing there, staring at the envelope.
That night, Emily confronted him.
“Are you sleeping with Samantha?”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
“Then what is she blackmailing you about?”
His face went pale.
Emily’s stomach dropped.
“Blackmail?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel, I followed you.”
He closed his eyes.
“You shouldn’t have.”
“So tell me the truth.”
“I can’t.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You can’t? After eight years of marriage?”
Daniel looked at her with something she couldn’t understand.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“There are things about my past you don’t know.”
“What things?”
He hesitated.
“Three years ago, I made a mistake.”
Emily stared at him.
“Was there another woman?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Three days later, Samantha contacted Emily directly.
She sent a photograph.
Daniel was standing outside a small gray house in a neighborhood Emily didn’t recognize.
Underneath it was a message:
“You think I’m the other woman. I’m not.”
A second message followed.
“I’m trying to help you find the woman your husband has been hiding.”
Emily’s hands went cold.
She called Samantha.
Samantha answered immediately.
“You need to listen carefully,” she said.
“Who is she?”
“I don’t know her name.”
“Then what do you know?”
“I know Daniel has been sending her money.”
“How much?”
“About $1,500 a month.”
Emily remembered the unexplained bank transfers.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Emily felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.
“Why?”
Samantha was silent for several seconds.
“Because three years ago, Daniel was involved in something that nearly destroyed someone’s life.”
Emily’s voice trembled.
“Was he having an affair?”
“No.”
“Then what was he doing?”
“He was protecting someone.”
That night, Emily searched every financial statement she could find.
The payments all went to the same name:
Rebecca Hayes.
Emily recognized the name.
Rebecca had once been her husband’s assistant.
She had met her several times.
Rebecca had brought coffee to their house during a company event. She had congratulated Emily on her anniversary. She had even sent flowers when Emily’s father died.
Emily had never suspected her.
She called Daniel.
“Who is Rebecca Hayes?”
Silence.
“Daniel.”
Finally, he said:
“Where did you get that name?”
“You’ve been paying her $1,500 every month.”
Another silence.
“Come home.”
When Daniel arrived, Emily placed the bank statements on the table.
“I know everything.”
Daniel sat down.
“No,” he whispered.
“You’ve been lying to me for three years.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Rebecca was pregnant.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Three years ago, Rebecca told me she was pregnant.”
Emily stared at him.
“Your child?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Emily couldn’t understand.
“Then whose?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your brother’s.”
Emily’s face went blank.
Her younger brother, Michael, had died in a car accident three years earlier.
Daniel continued.
“Rebecca was afraid Michael’s family would reject her. She didn’t have money. She didn’t know what to do.”
“So you paid her?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Michael was already dead. And I knew you were barely holding yourself together.”
Emily stood up.
“You lied to me for three years.”
“I know.”
“And Samantha?”
Daniel swallowed.
“She discovered the payments while auditing company accounts. She thought I was stealing money.”
Emily remembered Samantha’s message.
“How long are you going to keep lying to her?”
Daniel nodded.
“She confronted me. She wanted me to explain.”
Emily sat down slowly.
“So there was never an affair?”
“No.”
She stared at him.
“Then why did you act like you were guilty?”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Because I knew if you found out about Rebecca, you’d eventually find out about Michael.”
Emily said nothing.
Then her phone rang.
It was Samantha.
Emily answered.
Samantha sounded shaken.
“Emily, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“I found out where the money has been going.”
Emily frowned.
“Daniel told me about Rebecca.”
“I know.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
Samantha paused.
“The account receiving Daniel’s payments isn’t Rebecca’s anymore.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?”
“It was changed six months ago.”
“To whose name?”
Samantha hesitated.
Then she said:
“Emily Carter.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Her own name.
The woman Daniel had supposedly been protecting had been receiving money through an account connected to her.
She slowly turned toward Daniel.
He was already staring at her.
And for the first time in eight years, Emily realized something terrifying.
Maybe Daniel hadn’t been hiding another woman from her.
Maybe he had been hiding someone who was much closer than that.
And whatever happened three years ago…
Daniel still wasn’t telling her the whole truth.
