THE GHOSTWRITTEN TRAGEDY: Inside the 4-Million Dollar “Black Widow” Scheme of Kouri Richins
KAMAS, UTAH — The ink of deception has finally run dry for the woman the world once knew as a “Grief Guru.” Kouri Richins, the 36-year-old mother and author of the children’s book Are You With Me?, has been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. But as the prison doors close, the investigation has unmasked a level of calculation that has left even veteran detectives chilled to the bone.
The Mask of the “Grief Expert”
For over a year, Kouri Richins played the role of a heartbroken widow to perfection. She appeared on national television, wiping away tears while promoting a book she claimed was written to help her three y*ung sons cope with the sudden loss of their father, Eric Richins.
However, the 2026 trial revealed a shocking twist: Kouri never wrote the book. Investigative leads confirmed she hired a professional ghostwriter to manufacture a persona of “healing.” While the public saw a mourning mother, Kouri was actually building a brand to mask the cold-blooded reality of what happened in her kitchen on the night of March 4, 2022.
The Fatal Cocktail and the “Luxury” Plan
The prosecution’s case centered on a “Moscow Mule” cocktail Kouri prepared for Eric to celebrate a business deal. Forensic reports showed Eric didn’t just pass away; his system was flooded with five times the lethal dose of the F-substance.
Perhaps the most damning evidence was Kouri’s digital trail. Weeks before the incident, her search history included queries for:
“Lethal dosages of the F-substance”
“Luxury prisons for women”
“How to bypass a medical exam after a passing”
“This wasn’t a tragedy,” the prosecutor argued. “This was a lifestyle upgrade. She was researching her future jail cell before her husband had even taken his last breath.”
The Valentine’s Day “Trial Run”
The court also heard testimony regarding a terrifying incident on Valentine’s Day 2022. Eric Richins reportedly told friends he became “violently ill” after eating a sandwich Kouri prepared, forcing him to use his son’s EpiPen to stay alive. Investigators now believe this was a “test run” for the final act—a failed attempt that only led Kouri to perfect the dosage for her next move.
A Family Shattered: The Testimony of the Y*ung Ones
In a courtroom moment that left many in tears, the couple’s three y*ung boys provided statements through social workers. They described a household of “psychological monitoring” and admitted they felt “unsafe” around their mother.
While Kouri’s defense team argued that the y*ung witnesses were “coached” by Eric’s family to secure a 4-million-dollar inheritance, the jury saw through the claim. The eldest son’s account of his mother’s behavior after the “cocktail” was served was the final nail in the coffin for her defense.
The 28-Day Countdown: A Final Legal Gambit?
Despite the life sentence, the drama is far from over. Kouri’s lawyers have secured a rare 28-day extension to file for a new trial. They are pinning their hopes on a “stolen” legal note—the infamous “Walk the Dog” letter—which they claim was illegally seized from Kouri’s cell, violating her rights.
As it stands, the “Grief Author” will spend the rest of her days in the very system she once researched on Google. The woman who tried to profit off a tragedy she created has finally reached the end of her script.

Kouri Richins’ Sons ‘Don’t Want’ Her Out Of Jail, Demand Harshest Punishment For Dad’s Murder
Kouri Richins’ sons want no association with her after being proven guilty of killing her husband, Eric Richins. Their fear reportedly inspired her life imprisonment sentence without parole.

The Grief Author Murder Trial, documenting the real-life trial of Utah-based children’s book author Kouri Richins, has become one of the most closely watched trials on Court TV, and the internet has labelled her a ‘black widow.’
The Utah mother of three and children’s book author, who once publicly spoke about grief and healing, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being found guilty of murdering her husband with a fentanyl-laced cocktail. But it was the emotional statements from her children that became one of the most devastating moments of the entire case.
Kouri Richins’ sons said they fear her, don’t want to see her out of jail

When Eric Richins was killed in 2022, all three sons he shared with Kouri Richins were reportedly under the age of 10. Today, they are nearing their teenage years, and they are still deeply scarred by the heinous end of their dad, whom they idolised and with whom they had a close bond. One of the most heartbreaking moments in the trial came during Kouri Richins sentencing hearing in the May 13 session.

All three boys submitted heartbreaking victim impact statements, asking the judge to impose the harshest punishment possible for their killer mother. According to sentencing memos filed by prosecutors, they expressed fear over the possibility of their mother ever being released from prison. Kouri’s eldest son, identified in court documents as C.R., reportedly told the judge that he feared for his safety if she ever got out. He said:
“I’m afraid if she gets out, she will come after me and my brothers, my whole family. I think she would come and take us and not do good things to us, like hurt us.”

The other two boys also expressed a similar fear. The youngest son, W.R., expressed his fear, saying, “If she got out, I would be scared.” The middle child, identified as A.R., also made it clear that he did not want his mother freed. He stated:
“I don’t want [my mother] out of jail because I will not feel safe if [she is] out. With [her] in jail, I will be able to continue to feel safe and live a happy and successful life without fear of [her] hurting me or anyone I love.”

After Kouri’s arrest in May 2023, custody of the boys was transferred to Eric’s family. Later court updates confirmed that the children have continued living with their late father’s relatives, who officially received custody rights in 2024 while Kouri remained in prison.
Kouri Richins broke down as she addressed her sons

During her sentencing on May 13, 2026, Kouri addressed her sons directly in court, as she kept insisting that she was innocent despite the guilty verdict. While she previously did not testify during her trial, she decided to speak out this time. She did not react and rather was captured rolling her eyes and smirking when Eric Richins’ sister, Katie Richins-Benson, gave her statement.

However, Kouri’s demeanour changed completely when she stood up to speak to her sons. At the recent hearing, the children’s book author spoke for about 30 minutes, during which she mainly addressed the boys. Visibly emotional, the convicted killer said:
“I know today you don’t want to speak to me, and you hate me. That’s OK. When you are ready, I will be here for you… I can’t believe that this is real… Accused and now convicted of such a heinous crime. Convicted of never seeing you boys again… As much as you’ve been influenced into thinking that…I took your dad from you… That is an absolute lie… I still and will always love you, and I’m asking that you please just don’t give up on me.”

While Kouri insisted she would eventually come home and “never quit fighting my way home to you boys,” her kids’ statements reportedly played a key role in ensuring that she never made it out. Judge Richard Mrazik ultimately sided with prosecutors and imposed life without parole, saying Richins was “too dangerous to ever be free.”
While it’s hard to imagine the emotional toll the entire ordeal has taken on the Richins brothers, Eric’s family hopes to help them slowly rebuild a sense of peace and happiness.
