Canada is taking home a gold medal in curling at theย Milan Cortina Olympics, a triumphant finish that certainly wasnโt without controversy.
The Canadian menโs curling team beat Britain 9-6 to clinch Olympic gold on Saturday, their first gold in the competition since the 2014 Sochi Games. Canadaโs team includes Marc Kennedy, who made headlines earlier in the Olympicsย for publicly cursing out his opponent during a round-robin match when he was accused of double touching the stone.
Despite viral photos that appeared to show Kennedy using his finger to touch the stone after he released itโa violation of the sportโs double touching ruleโthe Canadian vice skip denied any wrongdoing.
โI donโt like being accused of cheating after 25 years on tour and four Olympic Games,โ Kennedy said afterward. โSo I told him where to stick it. Because weโre the wrong team to do that to.โ
After Canada won gold, Kennedyโs teammate Brad Jacobs clapped back with a fiery message for anyone criticizing the team for cheating.
โI donโt think weโre a team that needs any more motivation, but when some things went down this week and people were using some pretty outrageous words, like cheating, associating that with our team, Iโll guarantee you that that only motivated us further,โ Jacobs said. โ… Canada, and curling in Canada, is special to us. It means a lot to us. Integrity means a lot to us. And we wanted to go out there and prove everyone wrong and rise to the top of the podium.
โAnd I will say for anyone who called us cheaters, for anyone who said negative things about Marc Kennedy, about us, about Canada, about our families, I hope that the image of us standing on top of the podium, embracing one another, smiling ear to ear with our gold medals, is burned into your brain forever.โ

For most Olympics fans, itโs probably more likely thatย the infamous meme of Kennedy touching the stoneย will outlast the image of the Canadian curlers on the podium. In any case, Canada was able to come out on top in Milan, taking down Norway in the semifinals before besting Britain in the gold medal match.
What Canadian curlerโand alleged cheaterโMarc Kennedy said after his teamโs gold medal win
Kennedy didnโt have quite as an incendiary response as his teammate following Canadaโs win but did express how happy he was to have secured the sportโs biggest prize.
โIt means the world to me to see my teammates with a medal around their neck,โย Kennedy said. โI donโt know if people will ever understand what we went through this week as a team โ what I put them through this week as a team.โ
Kennedy received a verbal warning for using profane language during his heated incident in Canadaโs round-robin match against Sweden, but neither he nor Team Canada received any disciplinary action for their alleged cheating.
World Curlingโthe sportโs international governing bodyโhas sinceย informed all Olympic curling teams of the โproper releaseโ of the stone, though it seems like the double touching rule in particular could use more clarification moving forward.
โThis is a brand new rule that apparently was put in very recently that I think World Curling really does need to do a deep dive on and take a look at,โ Jacobs said. โIt didnโt seem like they were prepared for what went down. … It was a little bit of a mess. So hopefully us as players can maybe get a little more involved and help them figure out the best thing moving forward for the sport so that this type of nonsense doesnโt happen again.โ
Sweden is refusing to let go of Canadaโs alleged Olympic curling cheating
Itโs only cheating if you get caught โ and the Swedish arenโt letting Canada slide on this one.
Oskar Eriksson, a curler for Team Sweden,ย accused Canadian rival Marc Kennedyย of cheating during the 2026 Olympic Games, sparking a global reaction that is still raging.
โYou donโt react like that if you know youโre not guilty. I donโt think he slept as well that night as I did. If he now chooses to think he did the right thing, he will have to take responsibility for it,โ Eriksson told Swedish outletย Vรคrmlands Folkblad.

Eriksson, 34, called out Kennedy for โdouble-touchingโ โ touching the stone a second time after it crosses the hog line, which appeared to be confirmed by video that made the rounds on social media.
โHe hasnโt dared to look in my direction. Heโs probably ashamed,โ Eriksson added. โMature for a 44-year-old father of two.โ

โApparently, itโs alright touching the rock after the hog line,โ Eriksson said during their Feb. 14 round-robin match.

โYou can fโk off,โ Kennedy retorted.
The Canadian has continued to deny the accusations.
The following day, the Swiss team alsoย accused Team Canadaย of โdouble-touching.โ
The World Curling Board released a statement on the allegations, saying they do not use video replay to overturn game decisions, while also clarifying that a second touch of the granite after release is now allowed.
