“NETFLIX NEVER TOLD THE ENTIRE TRUTH ABOUT THE ‘ANGEL-FACED GIRL’ IN THE SHOCKING CRASH CASE.”
After watching The Crash, many believed they knew the whole story about MacKenzie Shirilla. But newly unearthed details are causing a stir on social media.
Behind her innocent exterior lies a series of allegations related to controversial testimony, suspicions of concealment, and plot points that viewers believe the film didn’t fully explore.
While the families of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan continue to search for answers, the case has once again become the focus of online debate.
After Netflix’s documentary *The Crash* brought the MacKenzie Shirilla case back into global attention, American social media quickly split into two extremes. One side saw it as a tragic story of a young girl losing control of her emotions and causing an irreparable tragedy. But the other believed that what the public saw was only the tip of the iceberg—and that behind the “teen princess” image the media portrayed lay a much colder, darker story.
What made this case particularly significant wasn’t just the deaths of two young people in a high-speed car crash. It was the feeling that the entire tragedy was a collision of two completely opposite images: MacKenzie Shirilla’s gentle, youthful appearance and the stark technical data showing the Toyota Camry crashed into the building at over 160 km/h without any sign of braking.
In the age of social media, appearance often strongly influences how the public perceives crime. This is something many American media experts pointed out after the trial. MacKenzie’s appearance in court—with her youthful face, long hair, and petite figure—made it difficult for many to associate her with the concept of a “murderer.” Therefore, the case quickly became embroiled in a larger debate about social prejudice: are the public more sympathetic to defendants who appear “harmless”?
Netflix, in *The Crash*, focuses heavily on the psychological aspects of youth, complex emotional relationships, and the devastation that tragedy leaves behind for all the families involved. The film gives the impression of a morally bleak case—where no one truly wins. But after the film’s release, numerous true crime communities on TikTok and YouTube began digging up court records, black box data, and witness testimonies to argue that the film had significantly “softened” MacKenzie Shirilla’s image.
This is how the term “princess-faced killer” began to spread online.
That’s how a segment of the public described the terrifying contrast between MacKenzie’s appearance and what prosecutors allege she did on that fateful night in 2022.
According to investigative records, Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were in a Toyota Camry with MacKenzie before the car crashed into an abandoned building in Strongsville, Ohio. Dominic was MacKenzie’s boyfriend, and Davion was a mutual friend. Both men died at the scene from the impact and subsequent fire. MacKenzie survived.
Initially, many believed it was a horrific speeding car accident. But then data from the Event Data Recorder system—often called the “black box”—completely changed the direction of the investigation.
Technical analysts determined that the Camry had accelerated continuously in the final seconds before the crash. The data recorded the accelerator pedal being pressed almost to its maximum. There were no signs of braking. No significant attempt to slow down. There was no evidence that the driver tried to avoid the building.

This led prosecutors to conclude that it wasn’t a loss of control.
But rather a deliberate act.
In the 2023 trial, the prosecution described the incident as “a homicide by car.” They argued that MacKenzie intentionally accelerated after a romantic conflict with Dominic Russo. Several text messages and statements about her emotional state before the incident were also presented to support the hypothesis that it was an impulsive but deliberate act.
That was the moment the public began to be obsessed with the question: what really went through the mind of a 17-year-old girl when the car crashed into the wall at such terrifying speed?
One of the biggest points of contention after Netflix released the film was that many viewers felt the film didn’t sufficiently emphasize the pain of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan’s family. On many forums, relatives of the victims were described as people experiencing a “second death” as social media constantly debated whether MacKenzie was a monster or a victim.
In particular, Dominic’s mother and sister drew attention when they revealed that in the initial period after the accident, they still tried to empathize with MacKenzie. They believed she was also a teenager who survived a terrible tragedy. But when the black box data was presented in detail in court, all those feelings collapsed.
According to them, the most painful feeling was not just the loss of Dominic.
Rather, it’s about realizing they may have felt compassion.
The feeling of sympathy for the person who intentionally took his life.
That very emotion made the case extremely intense on the American internet. Because unlike many traditional murder cases, this was a case where technology could almost recreate the last seconds before death.
No need for clear surveillance cameras.
No need for confessions.
Just the emotionless numbers from the car’s electronic system were enough to silence the entire courtroom.
Continuously increasing speed.
Maximum throttle.
No braking.
No swerving.
For many, that data was more terrifying than any emotional testimony.
Even after MacKenzie Shirilla’s life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years, the controversy continues. Some legal experts argue that convicting someone of murder in a car crash is a rare step and sets a unique precedent. The defense attorney argued that the prosecution couldn’t read the mind of a teenager in a state of emotional turmoil.
But the prosecution countered with technical data.
According to them, the natural human survival reflex is to brake or swerve when faced with imminent death. The fact that the car continued to accelerate until the very last moment cannot be explained simply by “panic.”
One of the most striking aspects of the case is how social media has transformed it into a symbol of the new fear of the digital age: the disappearance of secrets in the final moments of a tragedy.
Previously, traffic accidents relied on accounts, memories, and speculation. But modern cars now record almost every action of the driver. Every press of the accelerator, every brake, every steering wheel movement can be analyzed after an accident.
In the MacKenzie Shirilla case, technology almost became the primary witness.
And that’s what sent chills down many people’s spines.
Because if the data hadn’t existed, the public might have perceived this entirely as a tragic teenage accident.
Netflix has also been criticized for its tendency to “cinematize” real-life cases to increase emotional impact. Some argue that *The Crash* makes MacKenzie too “human” while not focusing enough on the two victims who lost their lives. Others counter that turning a teenage girl into an “absolute monster” is equally dangerous.
That’s the biggest paradox of modern true crime culture.
The public wants to understand the criminal’s psychology, but also wants a clear villain to hate.
But real life isn’t as simple as the movies.
MacKenzie Shirilla doesn’t resemble the traditional killer image the public is familiar with. She has no violent criminal record. No professional criminal past. Just a young girl in a tumultuous romantic relationship.
Perhaps it is precisely this ordinariness that frightens so many people the most.
Because the case creates the feeling that sometimes the most horrific tragedies don’t come from easily identifiable monsters.
But from moments of extreme emotion occurring in very ordinary life.
After the trial, many psychologists and criminal law experts used the MacKenzie Shirilla case as a prime example of “hamicidal impulsivity”—a state of deadly action that erupts due to heightened emotions in a very short period of time. The terrifying thing about this type of behavior is that it doesn’t always stem from long-term planning. Just a few seconds of losing control can create irreversible consequences.
Dominic Russo lost his life at the age of 20.
Davion Flanagan never returned home.
Their families are left with a permanent void.
And MacKenzie Shirilla will carry that case with her for the rest of her life, regardless of whether the public views her as a cold-blooded murderer or a young woman ruined by her own decision.
Perhaps that’s what continues to haunt America for years to come.
Not just because of the Camry’s terrifying speed.
Not just because of the cold, emotionless black box data.
But because it reflects the terrifying truth that a single moment of uncontrolled emotion is enough to turn youth, love, and the future of many people into ashes forever.
