A quote from the Idaho 4 case is causing an entire timeline to be re-examined — they didn’t need to go upstairs.
New debates surrounding the University of Idaho killings are erupting after many people unearthed Steve Goncalves’ statement that “the killer didn’t need to go upstairs.” Some theories now suggest that Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin may have been the initial targets — and things then went off track.
Nearly two years after the murders of four students at a house on King Road in Moscow, Idaho, the Idaho 4 case continues to create a rare phenomenon in the modern internet age: the more documents are released, the more people feel that the official story still has gaps that haven’t been fully filled.
Among thousands of discussions on Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, and true crime forums, one particular quote is constantly being dug up, analyzed, and fiercely debated:
“They didn’t have to go upstairs.”
That’s a phrase Steve Goncalves—Kaylee Goncalves’ father—repeated when talking about the case. And though it was just a brief statement, it became the focus of countless new theories about the order of the victims, the killer’s true motives, and what happened in the house in the early morning of November 13, 2022.
Because if “no need to go upstairs” is literally true, it raises a far more terrifying question:
What if Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were the original targets?
In the long-standing narrative, Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves—the two girls on the third floor—are often considered central to the case. This stems partly from Bryan Kohberger’s alleged stalking of some victims’ social media accounts, and the theory that the top floor was the killer’s initial target.
But over time, as more investigative documents were made public and witness testimonies were analyzed more thoroughly, some people began to see the case in a completely opposite light.

They argued that the perpetrator might have entered the house with the intention of targeting the second floor.
And the ascent to the third floor only occurred later.
This is where Steve Goncalves’ statement becomes particularly unsettling.
Because if the perpetrator truly intended to attack the third floor from the beginning, going up the stairs would have been inevitable. But if the second floor was the initial destination, then continuing upwards after the initial attacks could indicate a change of plan midway through—or someone upstairs accidentally overheard something.
That’s where the “Kaylee came downstairs” theory began to spread.
According to some unofficial analyses from the online community, it’s possible that one of the two girls on the third floor heard unusual noises from below. Given the house’s reputation as a “party house,” the initial sounds of footsteps, voices, or movement in the early morning might not have been enough to cause immediate panic.
But if Kaylee or Maddie had opened the door, stepped out into the hallway, or gone downstairs to investigate, the entire sequence of events could have changed in seconds.
That’s why Dylan Mortensen’s testimony—a surviving witness—continues to be scrutinized down to the smallest detail.
In her initial statement, Dylan said she heard sounds that made her think someone was playing or there was a disturbance in the house. She allegedly heard “someone’s here,” crying, and then movement that many interpreted as someone running up and down the stairs.
It was this “up and down the stairs” detail that caused the internet to explode with a host of new timelines.
If the killer moved continuously between floors, does that reflect a carefully planned… or an unexpected situation?
Some argue that if Xana and Ethan were attacked first, the chaotic noise might have alerted the perpetrator to someone else awake in the house. This could have led to them going to the third floor to eliminate potential witnesses or control the situation.
But others believe the opposite: that the third floor was where the attack began, and Xana and Ethan inadvertently confronted the perpetrator as he was trying to leave.
The problem is that, to date, many key details of the accurate timeline have not been fully disclosed to the public.
This creates the perfect gap for speculation to develop.
In the age of true crime internet, information gaps are almost always filled with collective theories.
And Idaho 4 is perhaps the clearest example of this phenomenon.
From the beginning of the case, the house on King Road was described as an almost chaotic environment in terms of accessibility. Friends came and went frequently. Gatherings took place constantly. Doors were often not securely locked. The alleged keypad code is widely known.
This has led many to question: if the perpetrator was a complete stranger, how could he confidently move around that complex multi-story house in the middle of the night?
And if he wasn’t unfamiliar with the space, how would that change the way the entire case is viewed?
These questions intensified after interviews with Ethan Chapin’s friends circulated online. Some people suggested that Ethan
— Staying at Xana’s house that night — may not have been part of the killer’s original plan. If so, the killer may have unexpectedly encountered an adult male in the house, causing the situation to escalate more rapidly than anticipated.
This also aligns with the hypothesis that the crime didn’t unfold according to the “perfect script” many people believe.
Because despite the horror of the attack, the scene also showed signs of chaos: some victims allegedly showed signs of resistance, the timeline was very short, and the killer left the scene apparently leaving behind many crucial forensic elements.
Some legal analysts argue that the public often views these types of cases through the lens of movies — where the killer always has an absolutely clear plan. But in reality, many violent acts are far more chaotic, especially when there is an element of surprise or unexpected resistance.
Therefore, the debate over “who was the primary target” continues to haunt the Idaho 4 case.
Not just out of curiosity.
But because it directly relates to the killer’s true motive.
If Maddie or Kaylee were the primary target, the case might reflect a personal obsession or fixation directed at a specific individual. But if Xana and Ethan were the initial center, the entire narrative changes significantly—from the direction of movement and the sequence of attacks to how the killer reacted under pressure.
It’s noteworthy that even though Bryan Kohberger has been indicted, many who followed the case still feel they don’t truly understand “why” behind that night.
To date, the prosecution has not publicly disclosed the full specific motive.
That gap continues to fuel countless online theories.
But the very phenomenon of the internet collectively dissecting every small detail also creates a worrying dark side. For months after the incident, many innocent people were subjected to speculation, analysis, or even harassment by the online community simply for appearing in the timeline. Friends of the victims, survivors, and even individuals completely unrelated to the case became targets of rapidly spreading theories.
This is the dark side of modern true crime culture: the line between analysis and collective obsession is increasingly blurred.
Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that Idaho 4 touched upon a very specific fear of today’s young Americans.
A crowded student dorm.
Friends coming and going freely.
Noisy weekend nights.
Everything seemed perfectly normal—until violence erupted in the most familiar space.
Perhaps that’s why the public still can’t “move away” from this case.
Because the more you look at the timeline, the more you feel that just one small difference—a locked door, someone waking up a few minutes earlier, a text message sent at the right time—could have changed the entire outcome.
And that’s what makes the phrase “they didn’t have to go upstairs” so haunting.
It’s not just about the stairs or the order of the victims.
It’s about how the public tries to understand the logic of a night where everything seems to have completely slipped out of common sense.
To this day, despite the legal charges, Idaho 4 remains in many people’s minds as a labyrinth of timelines that hasn’t truly closed.
And perhaps the most frightening thing is the feeling that the more facts emerge…the more incomprehensible the overall picture becomes.
