Renée Good, the woman shot and killed by federal immigration agents last week, has family in Oregon, and on Monday they released a statement urging “humanity, empathy and care.”
Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis Jan. 7. Video shows Good inside her car on a snowy road when an ICE agent tried to open the driver-side door. She turned to drive away when a different agent, standing near the front of her vehicle, shot into the car.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agent fired in self defense, though Minneapolis officials have disputed that. The killing sparked nationwide protests and calls to reform the Trump administration’s immigration operations.
Good, 37, was previously married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who grew up on the Oregon coast and died in 2023. The couple had one child together.
Macklin’s sister, Jessica Fletcher, released a statement on behalf of Good’s extended family who live in Portland and on the Oregon coast.
“Our family is grieving deeply, and we are speaking now with care, clarity, and love during a time of unimaginable loss,” the family wrote. “At the center of this tragedy are lives we love, and a family forever changed.”
Good’s “love and presence touched everyone who knew her,” and she was a devoted mother, poet and musician, the family wrote. Good’s family urged people to think of her three children, one of whom has now lost both parents.
Good’s death has resonated in Portland in particular, as federal agents shot two people in a car in Portland the next day, wounding both of them.
The federal government has alleged the two people are suspected members of a Venezuelan gang and one of them has been charged with assault on an officer. Portland Police Chief Bob Day said the pair did have some “nexus” with the gang but he did not provide information to make that connection clear.
Multiple protests and a vigil have been held in Portland to protest Good’s killing.
Although Good’s death has become a political cause for the right and the left, the family’s statement did not take any explicit position on the matter of how she died.
“We know this moment has stirred strong emotions and outrage,” the family wrote. “We share the desire for justice and accountability, and we ask that all conversations be rooted in humanity, empathy, and care for the family most affected.”
