Eight children have been killed in a Louisiana mass shooting.

Authorities responded to the shooting, which took place just after 6 a.m local time in the city of Shreveport, on Sunday, April 19, and found 10 people total had been shot, according to the Shreveport Police Department (SPD).

In a press conference, police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon said the crime scene was “very large” and spanned two residences.

He added that the incident appeared to be “domestic” in nature and was not random.

Bordelon said at least 10 people were shot in the incident, eight of whom are deceased.

All of the victims were juveniles, ranging in age from approximately 1 to 14, the SPD spokesperson added.

According to Bordelon, the suspected shooter fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle, prompting a police chase.

Police pursued the stolen vehicle to Bossier Parish. There, police ultimately discharged their weapons, killing the suspect.

“We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations here,” Bordelon said.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.

The SPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for updates on the case on April 19.
