A 21-year-old man who failed to return from a ski outing at the Northstar California Resort in the Tahoe area on Feb. 18 was found dead Thursday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced.

The victim was reported missing around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Fifteen skiers from the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team, a snowcat, two snowmobilers and the Northstar Ski Patrol began searching for the man early Thursday morning.

“At about 9 a.m., the search team sadly located the man deceased,” the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

8 backcountry skiers found dead and 1 still missing after Lake Tahoe avalanche
The man’s death is unrelated to Tuesday’s avalanche, which killed at least eight backcountry skiers in Nevada County. Days earlier, a 53-year-old man from Hillsborough died in a skiing accident at the Northstar California Resort.
