In a stunning twist to the racially charged Texas courtroom drama, some of Anthony’s most vocal internet supporters and financial donors are turning against his family. The sudden wave of internal anger comes on the heels of explosive revelations that Anthony’s defense team has officially filed a “pauper’s oath” with the state of Texas, claiming the newly convicted teenager is entirely “destitute” and requires a taxpayer-funded public defender to handle his high-stakes appeal.
The legal filing has sent shockwaves through community Discord servers, X (formerly Twitter) groups, and Reddit’s r/TrueCrime communities, where donors are openly demanding to know how a family that successfully raised over $626,000 via a highly publicized GiveSendGo campaign can suddenly claim to be entirely penniless.
From ‘Freedom Fighter’ to ‘Financial Mirage’
For fourteen months following the April 2, 2025, fatal stabbing of 17-year-old high school football star Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet, the Anthony family operated one of the most lucrative crowdsourcing campaigns on the internet. Banned from GoFundMe due to strict platform policies against fundraising for violent crimes, the campaign thrived on the Christian-based alternative GiveSendGo, pulling in a staggering $626,625.01 from donors who believed Anthony acted strictly in self-defense against a larger, aggressive athlete.
However, the tone among donors shifted dramatically on Tuesday after local legal analysts exposed the fine print of Anthony’s latest appellate filings.
“I put $200 into that fund because I thought we were paying for elite private defense attorneys to fight a biased system,” wrote one former donor in a viral Reddit thread that garnered thousands of upvotes within hours. “Now the trial is over, he got 35 years, and they are asking for a free government lawyer? Where did our half a million dollars go?”
Right-wing commentators, including prominent conservative Matt Walsh, immediately capitalized on the donor rebellion, reiterating theories that the entire trial process was dragged out by the family to keep the digital cash register ringing. Walsh previously alleged on X that Anthony’s parents, Kala Hayes and Andrew Anthony, purposefully bypassed potential plea deals that could have capped their son’s prison time at 20 years just to maximize the fundraising timeline—claims that, while speculative, are now being repeated by disgruntled former supporters.
The Fine Print That Blindsided Donors
As accusations of a coordinated “grift” reach a fever pitch, a closer look at the original GiveSendGo campaign reveals a harsh reality that many emotional donors simply overlooked.
While the fundraiser was widely shared across TikTok and X as a “Legal Defense Fund,” the descriptive text written by the family explicitly stated that the money would “not be solely dedicated to legal expenses.” The description noted that the funds would directly support “basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats.”
According to platform tracking data, the entirety of the $626,000 haul had already been legally disbursed in increments to Anthony’s mother, Kala Hayes, throughout 2025 and early 2026. While widespread rumors that the family used the cash to buy a luxury Cadillac Escalade or a $900,000 gated-community mansion were thoroughly debunked by independent fact-checkers at Snopes, the revelation that the cash was legally absorbed into the family’s daily operational and living expenses has left donors feeling heavily manipulated.
“Relocation and security costs are understandable, but burning through over $600,000 in a year and then leaving your son to rely on an overburdened state public defender for his life-or-death appeal is completely indefensible,” stated an administrative moderator from a prominent Dallas-based civil rights Discord server.
A Family Cornered
The timing of the donor backlash could not be worse for the Anthony family. During the emotional sentencing phase of the trial last week, Kala Hayes took the witness stand to tearfully beg the Collin County jury for mercy, stating her son was deeply remorseful for taking Austin Metcalf’s life.
The prosecution successfully weaponized her testimony, forcing her to acknowledge that regardless of the sentence, she would still be able to visit, speak with, and see her son—a luxury entirely stripped from Austin Metcalf’s grieving parents, Jeff and Megan Metcalf.
Now, instead of preparing a unified front for a complex appellate battle centered on Texas’s controversial jury selection process, the Anthony family is forced to fight a war on two fronts: defending a 35-year murder conviction in the state court of appeals, and answering to a furious, betrayed digital base that is demanding a full, line-by-line financial audit of the $630,000 disappearing act.
