SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — The Utah Department of Corrections has released a mugshot of Kouri Richins after she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of her husband.
On May 13, Kouri Richins, the Kamas mother convicted of killing her husband and then writing a children’s book about coping with grief, received the maximum prison sentence for murdering her husband, Eric Richins, in 2022.

On March 16, a jury convicted Richins of aggravated murder, attempted criminal homicide, two counts of fraudulent insurance claims, and forgery. She fatally poisoned her husband, Eric, with fentanyl at their home.
Kouri was sentenced to life in prison for the aggravated murder charge, five years to life for the attempted murder charge, 1 to 15 years each for the two fraudulent insurance claim charges, and up to five years for the forgery charge.
Counts two through five will run consecutively to each other. Richins will not have the opportunity for parole. She has the right to an appeal, and the defense told the judge they plan on filing one.
“A person convicted of [murder and attempted murder] is simply too dangerous to ever be free,” said Judge Mrazik.
Notably, Eric Richins was born on May 13, 1982, meaning Richins was sentenced on what would have been his 44th birthday.
