A Texas elementary school assistant principal and mother of three died after she was fatally shot inside her home, and her husband has now been arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the killing.
Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. on April 17 to a home in the 1000 block of Sproles Drive in Benbrook following a report that someone had been accidentally shot in the face, according to CBS Texas, WFAA and FOX 4.
When police arrived, they found a woman unconscious with a gunshot wound, the outlets reported.
She was taken to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she later died, per the outlets, citing authorities.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Lindsay Velasquez, an assistant principal at Luella Merrett Elementary School in the Fort Worth Independent School District, per CBS Texas, WFAA and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
She was in her second year in the role, the outlets reported.
Alberto Velasquez, 39, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, according the outlets.
He was later released on bond, the Star-Telegram reported.

Authorities have not publicly detailed what led up to the shooting, which police said was initially reported as “accidental,” per the outlets.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Alberto Velasquez was identified as Lindsay’s husband through property records reviewed by CBS Texas and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Both of them were employed by Fort Worth ISD, the district confirmed in a statement shared with CBS Texas.

“Fort Worth ISD is aware of a tragic off-campus incident involving two district employees,” the statement reads. “This situation did not occur on a Fort Worth ISD campus, and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts are with the family and all those impacted.”
Velasquez was a mother of three daughters, according to a GoFundMe created to support her family.
“Lindsay had a rare and incredibly special way of making people feel truly seen and cared for,” the fundraiser reads. “The loss of Lindsay leaves a void that will be felt forever in the lives of those who loved her, especially her daughters, who now face a future without their mother’s presence, guidance, and unwavering love.”
