The State has officially laid bare the calculated, cold-blooded steps Dr. Gerhardt Konig allegedly took to ensure his wife, Arielle, never made it off the Pali Puka Trail alive.
Plan A, B, and C: A Manual for Murder
In a gripping 46-minute presentation, Garner dismantled the doctor’s “self-defense” plea by revealing a systematic, three-tier plot to commit the perfect crime. According to the prosecution, the 47-year-old anesthesiologist didn’t just “snap”—he followed a deadly checklist:
PLAN A: THE PUSH. The initial attempt to shove Arielle into the 1,000-foot void. When she clung to life, the “Healer” turned “Hired Killer.”
PLAN B: THE SYRINGE. The surgical strike. Garner alleges Konig moved to inject his wife with lethal toxins to knock her out before hurling her body off the cliff.
PLAN C: THE ROCK. The brutal finale. When the drugs and the push failed, the doctor allegedly resorted to pure, primal violence—bashing Arielle’s head with a rock to “simply kill her outright.”
The Birthday Betrayal
The horror is magnified by the setting: a birthday hike on O’ahu meant to celebrate the woman he claimed to love. Instead of a celebration, Garner argued the trail was chosen for its isolation and its lethality. “Beyond a reasonable doubt,” Garner told the hushed courtroom, “the state has proven that Gerhardt Konig tried to kill his wife.”

The Konig family moved from Pittsburgh to Maui in 2023, seeking a tropical paradise. Today, that dream is a blood-stained nightmare. As the jury prepares to deliberate, the elite anesthesiologist sits mere steps away from a Life Sentence, his professional mask finally ripped away to reveal what the State calls a calculated murderer.
Honolulu County Deputy Prosecutor Joel Garner began his closing argument in Gerhardt Konig’s attempted murder trial today by telling the jury, “A motive. A beating. A confession. Ladies and gentlemen, beyond a reasonable doubt, the state has proven that on March 24, 2025, Gerhardt Konig tried to kill his wife, Arielle.”
“The state has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Gerhardt Konig committed the offense of attempted murder in the second degree,” Garner said.
Garner described three plans by Konig.
“Plan A, the push. The intent was to kill. When Plan A didn’t work, the defendant moved on to Plan B. Plan B, inject her with the syringe, knock her out, push her off the cliff. The intent behind Plan B was to kill,” Garner said. “Plan C, when the first two plans didn’t work, beat her with the rock, knock her out, drag her over, or just simply kill her outright.”

Konig, 47, is an anesthesiologist who moved to Maui from Pittsburgh in 2023 with his wife and three sons. He and Arielle were celebrating her birthday on O’ahu and were hiking the Pali Puka Trail when the attack occurred.
