The parade was taking place to celebrate the Lao New Year , according to KADN-TV (Fox 15) . The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was subsequently arrested, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said some victims sustained serious injuries. According to rescue workers , 11 people were taken to the hospital by road and two were airlifted.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway. The sheriff’s office said they do not believe it was intentional, “based on preliminary investigation.”

Videos posted on social media showed scenes of chaos, with many people lying on the ground near the blue vehicle. On Twitter/X, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he and his wife were “praying for all those affected,” and expressed gratitude to the rescue forces.

This year’s annual Lao New Year festival in Louisiana began on April 3rd and is expected to last until April 5th. The event is held to celebrate the culture and traditions of Laos. A live video streamed on the festival’s Facebook page on Saturday showed attendees dancing in the streets, with floats and dancers in traditional costumes.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the incident that occurred near the festival area ,” the organizers wrote on Facebook.

They also announced the cancellation of the music performances that evening for public safety reasons. “ If security resources are restored tomorrow (Sunday), we will only reopen the religious activities of the festival, while the stalls will continue to operate.”
