HONOLULU (KHON2) — Jurors spent much of the day watching Honolulu Police body-worn camera videos that prosecutors said show the immediate aftermath of a violent assault.
Corporal Kevin Chun testified he was among the first officers to make contact with Arielle Konig as she came off the trail with the help of witnesses. Chun told jurors she appeared weak and exhausted.
“She was breathing heavy, and her voice was a little bit weak to me,” said Cpl. Chun.
But under cross-examination, the defense pointed to the same moments, arguing Arielle was coherent and answering questions clearly.
Defense attorneys have argued from the start that Arielle initiated the confrontation.
“She’s yelling, ‘help, help, help,’ and he puts his hands on her to calm her down, and she starts swinging, starts kicking. He’s grabbing her and ends up on the ground,” said Thomas Otake, Gerhardt Konig’s attorney.
Investigators on the stand today also described the blood stains on the trail. Prosecutors presented a large rock recovered from the scene, believed to have been used during the assault. Jurors were allowed to hold and examine it up close.
The testimony builds on Arielle Konig’s own account from the stand a day earlier, where she described how the moment turned violent.
“He grabbed me really forcefully by the upper arms and said, ‘I’m so f*** sick of this s***. Get back there’ and starts pushing me back toward the cliff,” said Arielle Konig. “I had this moment where I thought I could get away, and then he started hitting me with a rock.”
Jurors today have also been shown the contents of Gerhardt Konig’s bag from the day of the alleged attack.
Taking the stand, HPD officers described their pursuit of Gerhardt Kong after nearly a day-long search.
“What did the suspect do after you said, ‘Police, show me your hands. Get on the ground,’” asked Deputy Prosecutor Joel Garner.
“He began to flee,” said HPD officer Riley Borges.
But the defense, arguing his client was not trying to run away from officers twice his size.
The trial resumes on Friday.
