Gutiérrez Molina, a 32-year-old crew member based in Dallas–Fort Worth, vanished while on an overnight stop in Medellín, according to officials.
Friends and investigators say that the flight attendant went out with coworkers in Medellín’s El Poblado nightlife district on Saturday.
Gutiérrez Molina and his coworkers left the club with two men and didn’t report back to the airport for his return flight to Miami, Florida, the next day.
The state of Gutiérrez Molina’s coworker, who was later recovered, could provide clues on what happened to the missing flight attendant.
She was found disoriented and in need of medical attention, and reported not remembering portions of the night.
Gutiérrez Molina’s family and friends now worry that he could have been drugged, possibly with scopolamine, also known as “devil’s breath.”
The substance is known to cause confusion, memory loss, impaired judgement and loss of consciousness.
“It was his female coworker, they both went out,” Sharom Gil, Gutiérrez Molina’s best friend, told CBS News.
“We don’t want to disclose anything that happened to her, but she was also a victim of whatever Fernando is going through right now.
“She was disoriented, but she was able to make it back to the layover hotel.”
Officials have announced that there are currently suspects in the case, but have not released their names or further details.
