“Emergency response protocols were immediately activated,” LaGuardia posted on X. “The Port Authority Police Department is on the scene along with the agency’s chairman and executive director. The airport is currently closed to facilitate the response and allow for a thorough investigation.”
In a follow-up post, the airport confirmed it will remain closed until at least 2:00 p.m. local time on Monday, March 23.
The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be leading an investigation into the crash, the FAA confirmed in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. Investigators will consider the speed the plane was moving, air traffic control staffing and if anyone was ejected from the aircraft, Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia said during a news conference, the BBC reported.

In an air traffic control audio recording released from the incident, one controller is heard giving the go-ahead for the firetruck to cross the runway before shouting, “Stop, stop, stop, stop. Truck 1, stop, stop, stop.”
Later, two unidentified controllers are heard discussing the incident, with one saying, “I got the word that we’re gonna be closed for a little while,” before the other notes, “That wasn’t good to watch.”
The first controller then says, “Yeah, I know. I was there. I was trying to reach out to ‘em to stop. We were dealing with an emergency earlier. I messed up.”
His colleague then says, “Nah, man, you did the best you could.”
