The third night after giving birth.
The hospital room on the fifth floor in Los Angeles was so quiet that I could clearly hear the steady beeping of my baby’s monitor.
Beep… beep… beep…
I lay there, my back aching, my body still weak from the C-section. Beside me, in a small bassinet, my son—Ethan—was sleeping peacefully. His tiny face, soft and warm, melted my heart.
I had waited for this moment for nine months.
But I never imagined… I would go through it alone.
My husband—David Miller—had left the very night I gave birth.
“I need to go home and sleep,” he said, sounding slightly annoyed. “I have to go to work early tomorrow.”
I looked at him, barely believing what I was hearing.
“I just gave birth…” I said weakly. “Can you stay with me for one night?”
He sighed.
“Your mom and my mom are already here. I wouldn’t be much help anyway.”
I gripped the blanket tighter.
“But I want you here.”
David was silent for a moment, then said something I would never forget:
“I can’t sleep in hospitals. It’s noisy and exhausting.”
That was it.
He turned his back.
And left.
I lay there, tears rolling into my ears.
Both mothers—mine and his—tried to comfort me, but nothing could replace the feeling… of being abandoned by your own husband.
In the beds around me, other husbands sat beside their wives, holding their hands, changing diapers, staying awake all night.
And me?
I only had the cold white hospital light above.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Not because of the pain.
But because… my heart felt empty.
Around midnight.
My phone rang.
The screen showed: Sarah Wilson—my neighbor.
I was surprised.
“Sarah?”
“Emily… are you okay?” Her voice sounded strange.
“I’m okay… the baby’s healthy… what’s wrong?”
She went silent for a few seconds.
Then said slowly:
“I don’t know if I should tell you…”
My heart started pounding.
“Just tell me.”
“I saw David earlier.”
I frowned.
“He went home.”
“Not alone.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
“I saw him… bringing another woman into your house.”
At that moment…
Everything in my head exploded.
“That’s not possible…” I stammered.
“I hope I’m wrong,” Sarah said. “But I saw it clearly. They went inside together.”
My hands began to shake.
I immediately called David.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No answer.
I looked at my son.
Still sleeping.
Unaware.
Unaware that his world had just begun with a crack.
That night, I didn’t cry.
There were no tears left.
Only one thing remained…
A fire.
The next morning, around 11 a.m.
David showed up.
As if nothing had happened.
He brought flowers.
“How are you feeling?” he asked with a smile.
I looked at him.
Where had this man been last night?
“Fine,” I said coldly.
He paused slightly.
“Where’s the baby?”
“Sleeping.”
He sat down and took out his phone.
No more questions.
No concern.
As if last night… was completely normal.
I couldn’t take it anymore.
“Where were you last night?”
He looked up.
“At home.”
I smiled.
A smile that didn’t feel like mine.
“Alone?”
He frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
I stared straight into his eyes.
“Someone saw you bringing a woman home.”
One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.
I saw it clearly.
The flicker of panic in his eyes.
“That’s ridiculous,” he said quickly. “Who told you that?”
“I don’t care who,” I replied. “I just want to know… is it true?”
“No,” he said. “You’re imagining things.”
I nodded slowly.
“Fine.”
I picked up my phone.
“Someone took pictures.”
He flinched.
“What?”
“I haven’t seen them yet,” I said calmly. “But if you want… I can post them online.”
His face turned pale.
“Emily, are you crazy?”
I didn’t respond.
Just looked at him.
And then…
He broke.
“Alright…” he sighed. “I’ll tell you.”
I stayed silent.
“Her name is Jessica,” he said. “An old friend.”
“What friend?”
“A close friend… from college.”
I had never heard that name before.
“She reached out a few months ago,” David continued. “She had just gone through a breakup… she was upset… needed someone to talk to.”
I let out a cold laugh.
“Talk… in my house?”
He avoided my eyes.
“Last night… she called,” he said quietly. “Said she had been attacked out of jealousy… didn’t know where to go… she was scared.”
My hands clenched.
“And you… brought her home.”
He nodded.
“While your wife was on the operating table?”
He said nothing.
“I called you. You didn’t answer.”
“My phone was on silent.”
“You stayed there all night?”
“…Yes.”
The air froze.
“I swear… nothing happened,” he said quickly. “I was just helping her.”
I laughed.
A dry, hollow sound.
“You left your wife and newborn in the hospital… to bring another woman home… and you want me to believe nothing happened?”
He stayed silent.
I looked at my son.
Still asleep.
Innocent.
A tear fell.
“I thought…” I said slowly, “that giving birth would be the happiest moment of my life.”
I turned back to him.
“But it turns out… it’s the moment I realized I chose the wrong man.”
David panicked.
“Emily—”
“Don’t say anything.”
I closed my eyes.
Took a deep breath.
“I want a divorce.”
The room fell silent.
“You can’t…” he said, his voice shaking. “We just had a baby.”
“That’s exactly why.”
I opened my eyes.
Looked straight at him.
“I don’t want my child to grow up… with a father like you.”
He had no words left.
Outside the window, sunlight poured in.
Everything looked normal.
Except my marriage…
Which had ended the night before.
But deep inside me…
One question remained.
Was it really just “helping”…?
Or…
Was that only the surface of something far more disturbing?
I looked at my baby.
Gently touched his tiny hand.
No matter what happens…
I know one thing.
I will never…
Allow myself to be treated like that again.
