The incident occurred at a hospital in Homewood, Ala.

An Alabama man fatally shot his wife shortly after she gave birth before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police in Homewood, Ala., said they responded to a shooting at Women’s Center of Brookwood Hospital on Sunday, March 1.

Once there, officers discovered that a woman, who was a patient at the hospital, and a man had both died from gunshot wounds. No one else was injured.

Police believe the incident was a murder-suicide.

WVTM, WBRC, and AL.com reported that the two deceased were identified as Precious Johnson, 24, and her husband, Kynath William Terry Jr., 19.

Citing a coroner’s report, WVTM reported that Johnson, who was shot multiple times by Terry, had just had a baby.

The outlet spoke to Terry’s mother, who said the couple had been having marital issues but that she didn’t know her son was violent.

Danne Howard, the president of the Alabama Hospital Association, spoke to WBRC in the aftermath of the incident.

“There are a few places in our world where we should feel safe — at church, our hospitals, and our homes,” Howard said, per the outlet. “Unfortunately, things happen and we do not feel safe anymore. We want to assure the public that our hospitals and our health care providers consider safety just as important as providing quality health care.”

Newborn baby orphaned moments after being born when National Guardsman dad, 19, shot wife, 24, then himself

An Alabama National Guardsman fatally shot his wife shortly after she gave birth to their first child before turning the gun on himself.

Kynath Terry Jr, 19, opened fire on Precious Johnson, 24, while she was a patient at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Homewood, a suburb of Birmingham.

Johnson had just given birth and was shot multiple times. It is unclear whether their newborn was in the room at the time.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at the hospital at 9.25pm on Sunday.

When they arrived, they found Terry and Johnson dead with no other parties injured.

Early signs led investigators to believe that the tragedy was ‘an apparent murder-suicide and is domestic in nature,’ the Homewood Police Department said in a statement.

Terry’s mother told WTVM13 that the couple was having some marital troubles before the birth but that she could not imagine that her son would kill his wife and himself.

She added that Terry had just completed Army National Guard training and had recently married Johnson.

Immediately after the shooting, Baptist Health entered lockdown ‘out of an abundance of caution’ according to a statement released by the hospital Sunday evening.

The lockdown was lifted after authorities determined there was ‘no active threat to patients, team members or the public.’

Danne Howard, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, told WTVM13 the shooting was the first time something like this has happened during her 30-year stint at the organization.

She said that Sunday’s apparent murder-suicide could lead to an overhaul of security protocols at hospitals in Alabama.

Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress said in a statement: ‘Last night, our police department responded to a tragic shooting at Brookwood Hospital.

‘Our officers acted quickly to secure the scene and ensure there was no ongoing threat to the public. This remains an active investigation.

‘Our thoughts are with the victim, her family, the hospital staff, and everyone impacted. We are working closely with hospital leadership and will provide updates as appropriate.’
